About Dau Shiang Elementary School

School Name Hualien County Dau Shiang Elementary School
Address No. 99, Dau Shiang Rd., Ji’an Township, Hualien County, Taiwan
Established April 1, 1956
Phone (03) 852-4663
Principal Ms. Chen Tzu-Fang (since 2021)

Located at the northern edge of the East Rift Valley Plain, our campus is surrounded by rice fields on three sides, offering a beautiful natural environment filled with seasonal charm. Clean spring water flows from the mountains through irrigation channels encircling the school, nurturing abundant rice crops. During harvest season, the air is filled with the aroma of rice — the inspiration behind our school’s name: “Dau Shiang,” meaning “the fragrance of rice.”

Originally established in 1954 as a branch of Yichang Elementary School, it became independent in 1956 as Dau Shiang Elementary School. In 1975, Guanghua Elementary School was separated as an independent school, and district boundaries were adjusted.

We offer general education classes, special education classes, and a kindergarten. Our student body is culturally diverse, with approximately 54% Hakka, 37% Minnan, and 9% Indigenous students.

Active student teams include our pan flute ensemble, jump rope team, and volleyball team. We foster a love for reading and support holistic development through after-school programs and themed activities.

Reading and literacy are core parts of our curriculum. Morning reading sessions and creative writing activities are part of daily life, cultivating a strong reading culture on campus.

Our centralized special education class provides inclusive learning support. We also offer after-school programs and clubs to encourage diverse interests and talents.

Since 2014, we have offered a kindergarten to strengthen early childhood education. In 2022, we joined the Ministry of Education’s Bilingual School Pilot Program to enhance students’ English learning.

The school values cultural heritage, especially Hakka traditions. We provide classes in Hakka cuisine and immersive Hakka language learning.

Our school facilities include a library, computer lab, track and field, basketball courts, and a covered sports arena. Reading-related programs such as “Dream Reading House,” “Reading Star Challenge,” and “Parent-Teacher Book Clubs” enrich our learning environment with joy and imagination.
